About Jonathan Coppel
Jonathan Coppel is an accomplished executive with over 25 years’ experience in leading economic and regulatory institutions at an international, national and state level. He is currently serving as Tribunal Member at IPART, the independent economic regulator of NSW, where he also chairs the Energy Network Regulation Committee. He brings to IPART knowledge and experience in energy markets, regulatory practice in monopoly sectors, including water and electricity transmission and competition policy. His expertise includes corporate governance of State-Owned Enterprises, risk management and strategy, making him a valuable advisor in dynamic organisations. He is also passionate about mentoring emerging leaders. Jonathan’s career spans leadership roles at leading economic institutions. Between 2011 and 2021 he was Commissioner at the Productivity Commission where he led a diverse range of public inquiries including into Australia’s intellectual property arrangements, the vocational education and training sector, natural disaster funding arrangements and a landmark report on childcare that formed the basis for current government funding arrangements to give families, affordable, accessible and quality childcare and early education choices. He also led influential research projects into digital disruption, the impacts of and how to respond to a global trade war and developed a framework to identify vulnerable supply chains. His policy analysis and advice skills were developed while working in senior economist roles at the RBA, and with the OECD and the International Energy Agency in Paris where he learnt to speak French. Jonathan holds a master’s in policy administration from Columbia University and a bachelor’s in economics (Honours) from the ANU. He is also a graduate from the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He lives in Melbourne with his wife, and their two children currently live and work overseas.
