Background
About Jonathan Edwards
Not many students get the opportunity to scale-up their academic research times over the course of their PhD: starting at a lab-scale CO2 electrolyzer the size of a Rubik's cube, I helped demonstrate a prototype system the size of a refrigerator and then a pilot-plant the size of a semi-truck! I was doing my PhD in electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion, an emerging technology which offered a sustainable means to produce chemicals and fuels. I was fascinated by the technology but it was largely limited to the lab-scale. I enrolled in the $20 million NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE to demonstrate that my technology could scale-up. This experience ignited my interest in large-scale, applied electrochemistry - an area I believe to be a powerful tool for environmental sustainability. I thrive on multi-disciplinary projects which require the integration of various fields of science and engineering. I have 25 academic publications which demonstrate my range of expertise and make me well-suited for these challenges. Some of my technical expertise includes: Hands-on electrochemistry: gas diffusion electrode (GDE) manufacture, catalyst layer fabrication, membrane electrode assembly (MEA) preparation, electrochemical measurement and analytical techniques, gas and liquid product analysis. Reactor design: leveraged my experience in mechanical design to design flow-type and zero-gap electrolyzers, pressurized electrolyzer systems (capable of operating up to 90 bar), and pilot-scale electrochemical cells (800 cm2). Process engineering: incorporated knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and electrochemistry to predict mass and energy balances for electrolyzer systems of various sizes; performed feasibility assessments based on energy, cost, and environmental impact; some experience with chemical simulations and processes for gas and liquid product purification. I love leading teams and working with others to meet these goals. I try to lead by example - I am known for my strong work ethic and dedication. Those who have worked with me know that I enjoy helping and mentoring others. My work with the electrification of chemical manufacturing has been recognized by the sustainable economy magazine Corporate Knights (2022 Top 30 Under 30 Sustainability Leader in Canada) and the Globe and Mail Report on Business (2023 Changemaker). Want to know more? I am currently looking to expand my network in the cleantech and electrochemistry industries. Connect with me or send me an email!
