About Jonathan Hagman

I've been the Installation Director for the Aspen Art Museum, an institution dedicated to contemporary art and artist from around the world, for over a decade. In this position I work closely with our internal curatorial team, artists, and professionals in the international art world to create and achieve the highest level of exhibitions. Often exhibitions are planned many months if not years in advance and, prior to art arriving, I manage exhibition design, contractor work (i.e. fabrication, construction, painters, AV technicians, etc.), installation plans and staff. I oversee an team of two full time Installation Managers and up to eight part time installers as exhibitions require. We oversee the movement, unpacking, installation and lighting of the art, working side by side with the artist(s), curators, and our registrars. Following the opening we maintain the galleries throughout the exhibition. Furthermore I work closely with other departments assisting with events, education, and retail. Creativity, problem solving, teamwork, communication, trust and respect are crucial skills in this demanding, high pressure work environment. A number of the same installers are still working with me after many years. We have a saying "we never do the same installation twice!", as each exhibition has unique challenges and demands. Ingenuity and collaboration are paramount.
