Background
About Jonathan Hanson
I have been a UK accredited specialist in Sport and Exercise medicine since 2010. Having completed higher specialist training in Belfast and Newcastle and holding Fellowships of the both the British and Irish Faculties of Sport and Exercise medicine. This is the highest level of sports medicine training that is possible to achieve and I am the only appointed Consultant in sports medicine in the NHS in Scotland. I am fortunate to have worked with teams in professional and grassroots sport up to World Championship and Olympic level. I have twenty years experience of performance Rugby Union & League at all levels of the sport including senior international. I have worked at the Beijing, Rio & Tokyo Olympic Games with Team GB based in the headquarters in the Athlete Village where I lead on a number of projects. I was part of Gareth Southgate’s staff with the England Men’s Football team for four seasons including the Russia World Cup where we reached the semi-finals. Most recently I held a role leading the medical team co-ordinating sports medicine delivery for eight Formula One drivers. I am also a Fellow of the Royal College of Emergency medicine by examination and still work in an NHS Emergency department providing senior Emergency medicine services each week meaning I have Consultant level specialist, generalist and emergency skills which are valuable to working and travelling with sports teams and athletes. I enjoy working to solve complex and difficult musculoskeletal problems to help patients. I am interested in decision making under pressure & in particular strategies to improve the accuracy of our medical decisions in competition, often in environments that allow limited clinical assessments and difficult time pressured communication with large public scrutiny. I am also interested in recognising head injury in sport and helping to train others for sports injury & emergency management of unwell or critically injured players or athletes. I have been involved in the production of a number of well known emergency care courses on a national and global level. I am friendly, approachable and able to see the brighter side of life in the situations I am in. I value peoples actions as a measure of who they are more than words. These are essential qualities when leading the team in the emergency department or whilst living on top of one another for six weeks or more in an Olympic camp environment. Equally I am diligent at leading and completing projects, able to think laterally and take great pride from being involved in the teams that I am.
