Absolute Bearing is a seafaring term that refers to your position relative to the direction of true north. When a ship has an accurate reading on their heading, they know exactly how to navigate their vessel without confusion or error. We saw this as an analogy for the coffee industry - where "absolute bearing" can be used with any number of steps - such as sourcing, roasting, brewing or in reference to an exact location (latitude and longitude) where a coffee is harvested. Our vision for Absolute Bearing aspires to provide you with the most flavorful and educational experience every step of your way, from farm to cup- I grew up in a small Connecticut town, not knowing that one day I’d be roasting coffee. But after 20 years of service as a nuclear mechanic in the Navy, I retired and focused my energy on my true passion: a love of coffee and a desire to create something that aligns with my values. One of the things that drew me to coffee was its incredible diversity. There are literally thousands of different kinds of coffee—each with its own distinct flavor and characteristics. It’s basically just like wine—but even more fun! I see the vast chain of people involved in getting a cup of coffee from farm to mouth as being pretty magical. As a former veteran, I see my role as a coffee roaster no differently than my role serving this country— because at the end of the day, we’re all just trying to do what we can to make our little corner of the world a better place In the 15 years that I’ve been around coffee, I’ve learned how unique each coffee is, how every bean has its own character. That’s why I treat every new crop with great care and enthusiasm. My approach to coffee roasting is twofold: first, I want to bring out the best in beans and help you discover their mystery. Second, I want to share what I know about coffee with people who care as much as I do. My wife Lisa works with me too, and together we have poured our hearts into Absolute Bearing.
