Background
About Jonathan P. Darsey
I am currently a PhD candidate at Georgia Tech in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, where I investigate how digital data & tools, such as big data, geographic information systems, and machine learning, can be combined to form 'mosaic' analyses of complex interactions between countries, such as those that occur under economic sanction regimes. My interest in complex system analysis stems from my 15 years working with pharmaceutical companies to develop and implement growth strategies. Through this work, I experienced first-hand that a great strategy was only one variable-and many times one of secondary importance-determining whether a company succeeded or failed, as strategy interacts in complex and often unpredictable ways with the organizational structure, incentives, and culture of a company, along with the same factors for competitors, to ultimately determine a company's level of success. My research investigates how these same factors interact with traditional measures of state power, such as economic strength and military capabilities, to affect the outcomes of international political competition between states. Prior to Tech, I was the Associate Dean for the Executive MBA (EMBA) program for the Goizueta School of Business at Emory University, one of the top 25 EMBA programs in the world. Before joining Emory in 2012, I held a number of increasingly significant roles within global consultancies, culminating with his role as a senior partner in Accenture’s Strategy Consulting Practice. In this role, I focused on providing brand and corporate strategy advice to clients in the global Pharmaceutical industry, leading engagements with leaders from top-20 pharmaceutical companies in North America, Europe, South America and Asia. I hold a Masters of International Relations from American University, an MBA with Distinction from Cornell’s Johnson Graduate School of Management, a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Latin American Studies from Davidson College, and I was a 1990-91 Thomas J. Watson Fellow studying the historical roots of underdevelopment and weak governance institutions in Latin America and Spain.
