About Jonathan Parker

Passionate about clear, precise communication, with attention to detail and an eye for the big picture. I love exploring the big questions in the little details and helping others improve their writing. I received my PhD in History from UT Austin in May 2025. My doctoral dissertation, which I successfully defended in April 2025, showed how the Czechoslovak police service struggled to embrace democratic norms in the wake of the First World War. In my time as a PhD student, I also completed a Portfolio Program in Museum Studies. You can read some of my work here: https://notevenpast.org/?s=jonathan+parker In 2018 I completed a double Master's degree at the University of Glasgow in Scotland and Jagiellonian University in Poland. My Master's thesis examined the relationship between museums in Prague, Czech Republic and Czech national identity. In 2016 I graduated with a BA in History and the Plan II Honors program from the University of Texas at Austin, having completed a word thesis on Czechoslovak emigrant nationalist propaganda during the First World War. I worked with primary sources in English and French. I am mainly interested in the social history of nationalism and national identity, as well as state building, maintenance, and collapse. I focus on the formerly Austro-Hungarian lands, especially Bohemia and Moravia (modern-day Czech Republic). In my free time I like to study foreign languages including German, Hungarian, and Portuguese.
