About Jonathan Potter

I lead the School of Communication and Information at Rutgers. The School brings together an electric mix of disciplines that are responsible for both mapping and shaping the future: communication, information science, and journalism and media studies. In terms of research, I work in the broad field of discourse studies, with a particular focus on the way careful analyses of interaction can be a route to understanding and reworking basic psychological questions. This approach to research is called discursive psychology. It is strongly allied to conversation analysis. I am currently studying child protection helplines, expressions of emotion and admonishments in family interaction. I often write on theoretical matters in social psychology and on qualitative methods. My work has been cited more than thirty thousand times. I am a member of the Academy of Social Sciences and an honorary fellow of the TAOS Institute.
