Over the past twenty years my work has included: Establishing the extent and character of ancient woodland and forest across the UK, especially in England. Restoration of heathland, mire, wetland and river systems across the public forest estate in England. The eradication of invasive species. A wide range of species conservation actions and species reintroductions. The conservation of rare plants, fungi, insects, birds, reptiles and mammals. Directing the management of SPA as SAC designated forests and open habitats across England. The establishment of heathland management regimes. The establishment of management regimes for large herbivores, both wild and domestic, in conservation programmes on wood pastures, wetlands and heathlands. The management of teams of conservation and forestry staff, large budgets and financial reporting systems. The management of research and monitoring contracts, partnership projects and conservation management contracts. The securing of significant funding support for forest and nature conservation projects. Addressing and resolving conflicting policy challenges. Integrating economic opportunity and necessity into environmental and wildlife conservation management. My overarching aims have been to make a difference in the future of the natural and historic landscape and to the future economic and environmental wellbeing of the Country.and to support others in doing so; ideally while having fun and generating enthusiasm!
