About Jonathan Wegner

I professionally aspire always to be a creative presence of life and light. I am a published author, academic lecturer, and spoken word artist who has published and spoken in academic and popular venues. My professional specialization lies in the critical study of religion where for about a decade of post-graduate education I have studied the ancient Near Eastern, Mediterranean, and African cultural setting of the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. I am also a theologian. Moreover, my academic research and expertise engages the sociology of religion and race. More specifically, I specialize in ancient religious and philosophical notions of race, ethnicity, and racism, as well as their contribution to the development of modern categories of race and racism. Over the course of my master's and current doctoral program, I have held lectureships and teaching appointments at the Jackson School of International Studies (University of Washington) and the Divinity School (University of Chicago), instructing for a variety of courses, including those on the New Testament, Attic, and Koine Greek. I have also taught internationally, teaching in Kasoa, Ghana between my master's and doctoral program. My current research compares the Fourth Gospel to ancient apocalyptic literature and primarily the Egyptian apocalypse Poimandres.
