The Netherlands, Zeeland, the '90s. The cold tiles of our hallway felt cool against my bare feet as I hid behind the corridor door, quietly listening to my parents' voices. With sparkling eyes, I had confessed to my mother that I dreamt of having my own PC—a rarity in our immediate surroundings. My father's voice sounded concerned:"A PC is very expensive, and what does a boy like him need with it?" My mother tried to convince him:"Maybe it's the future, Wim." My father disagreed, and I quietly went to my room feeling disappointed. Four weeks later, three boxes were delivered; to my surprise it was a brand-new PC. Against my father's wishes, my mother had secured a PC through a work program. I could barely locate the on and off button, but my journey into the world of technology had begun. As no one in my surroundings had experience with it, I had to figure everything out myself. From this arose my passion to inspire and guide people when it comes to the impact of technology. Now, decades later, I realize that this moment embodied the 'deceptive phase.' This term refers to a period when the promise of technological advancement is underestimated due to our human, linear perspective. Look now: that same PC technology resides in nearly everyone's pocket, in the form of a smartphone. It's the miracle of exponential growth. As a result, we expect not 100, but rather years of progress in the 21st century. This means the future will be more surprising for many than they realize. A better understanding of what’s to come and the agility to respond quickly is therefore absolutely critical for organisations. This way, you can better prepare for changes that could be at your doorstep before you know it. As an Innovation Leader, I have founded a Digital Factory for Deloitte. A very diverse team that acts as a ‘change the business’ function that rapidly solves the biggest challenges and unknowns in the Employee Experience and Future of Work for Deloitte. With the essence of a start-up we explore, ideate and experiment with the objective to create impactful change. As a Speaker, I’m on a mission to inspire and guide as many people as possible when it comes to the impact of technology. My often-booked keynotes are- “Wake up!
