About Jose Varillas

With 6 years of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry, I work as an MSAT Senior Scientist at Lonza Biologics, a global leader in contract development and manufacturing. I have a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Florida, where I also obtained my B.S. in Chemical Engineering. I have multiple certifications and publications in the fields of process safety, risk assessments, circulating tumor cells and microfluidic devices. As a MSAT Scientist, I apply my expertise in manufacturing processes, viral vectors, technology transfer, continuous improvement, sterility assurance, aseptic processing, and process control to support the production, development, optimization, and scale-up of biologics and cell & gene therapy (CGT) products. I work with cross-functional teams to implement change controls, conduct root cause analysis, implement corrective and preventive actions, troubleshoot process issues, and design and execute process performance qualifications (PPQs) for clinical and commercial cGMP manufacturing. I contribute to safety, quality, validation, and regulatory compliance activities. My mission is to enable the production of high-quality and innovative therapies that improve patients' lives. I am passionate about learning new technologies and skills, collaborating with talented colleagues with diverse experiences, and advancing the biopharmaceutical manufacturing field.
