About Joseph Bresee
Dr. Bresee is the Associate Director of Global Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Influenza Division in Atlanta. In this capacity, is responsible for working to ensure that CDC’s global influenza portfolio and partnerships achieve the goals of reduced influenza burden and improved global readiness for influenza epidemics and pandemics. He also serves as the Director of the Partnership for Influenza Vaccine Introduction (PIVI) which is a public-private partnership to accelerate pandemic preparedness through growing global seasonal influenza vaccination programs. From 2005 – 2017, Dr. Bresee was the Chief of the Epidemiology and Prevention Branch in the Influenza Division. His branch is responsible for conducting influenza surveillance, working to understand influenza disease burden, helping to derive appropriate vaccine and antiviral use policies to prevent seasonal influenza, detecting and preventing avian influenza and pandemic influenza, and providing technical expertise to global public health partners. Dr. Bresee joined CDC in 1993 as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer in the Influenza Branch. From 1995-2005, Dr. Bresee worked on viral gastrointestinal infections and respiratory infections. His research and public health activities focused on rotavirus disease and rotavirus vaccines, and worked to ensure that rotavirus vaccines were available for children in both the U.S. as well as those living developing countries. Dr. Bresee is a pediatrician. He trained at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, and then completed his Pediatric Residency at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center/University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Bresee has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed papers and textbook chapters. He is a Captain (retired) in the U.S. Public Health Service.
