Background
About Joseph Constable
Joseph Constable is a British curator, writer and editor, and the director of Kunsthall Stavanger, Norway from January 2026. From 2021-25, Constable led the visual arts programme at the De La Warr Pavilion, a multidisciplinary art centre located in a historic, modernist building in Bexhill-on-Sea, UK. During his four-year tenure, he curated a series of acclaimed exhibitions, including Betty Parsons: Sheer Energy (2025), the first European survey of the seminal American artist and gallerist; Hélio Oiticica: Waiting for the Internal Sun (2023–24), an immersive exploration of one of Brazil’s most influential artists; Angelo Madsen: A Crisis of Human Contact (2023), a multidisciplinary commission examining trans intimacies and kinship structures; and Barbara Kasten: Site Lines (2024), a site-specific response to the Pavilion’s distinctive architecture. In 2023, he facilitated the arrival of Tschabalala Self’s monumental sculpture Seated at the Pavilion. Prior to the De La Warr Pavilion, Constable spent six years as a curator at London’s Serpentine Galleries, developing major institutional presentations by Cao Fei, which went on to win the 2021 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize, and Hervé Télémaque, which later toured to Aspen Art Museum in 2022. Additional curatorial and editorial projects include exhibitions and publications with artists such as Albert Oehlen, Luchita Hurtado, Grace Wales Bonner, Atelier E.B, Christo & Jeanne-Claude, Ian Cheng, Torbjørn Rødland, Arthur Jafa, John Latham, Lucy Raven, Helen Marten, and Alex Katz. With over a decade of experience, Constable has also worked independently as a curator and producer, developing exhibitions, films, live events, and residencies across various platforms and contexts. In 2015, he was the recipient of the NEON & Whitechapel Gallery Curatorial Award, and has participated in curatorial and writing residencies in Brazil, China, South Korea, Canada, and the UK.
