About Joseph Cook
I am Head of R&D at the Green Software Foundation! Previously, I was a contractor working across a wide range of projects in open source software, including ~1.5 years contracting for the Ethereum Foundation. At the same time, I work part time running a research group where we focus on "computing the cold"- developing innovative software tools for monitoring Earth's changing snow and ice. This includes a lot of geospatial software development, spectroscopy and computer modelling, and builds upon a decade and a half of research and expeditions across the Arctic and Antarctic, especially on the Greenland Ice Sheet. Earlier employment includes a Senior Lectureship in Computer Science and several postdoctoral positions on European and UK Environment Council funded projects. My work on environmental computing has earned me a Rolex Award for Enterprise and a Microsoft AI for Earth award and I am a National Geographic Explorer.
