About Joseph Ferrara

As Chief Scientific Officer of Rigaku Americas and Deputy Director of the X-ray Research Laboratory at Rigaku Corporation, I’ve spent more than three decades at the intersection of X-ray science, instrumentation, and innovation. My work has spanned physical organometallic chemistry, crystallography, and biomedical imaging—fields united by a common goal: enabling researchers to see and understand more. Throughout my career, I’ve helped bring numerous technologies from concept to commercialization, including high-flux X-ray generators, hybrid pixel array detectors, automated sample handling systems, and, most recently, a phase-based X-ray microscope for soft-tissue imaging. These tools have found homes worldwide in academic labs, industrial settings, and national research centers. Today, I lead global R&D collaborations with partners in academia, industry, and government. These efforts are driven by a deep commitment to serving the scientific community that shaped my career. Having benefited from over 35 years of working alongside crystallographers and X-ray analysts, I see it as both a privilege and a responsibility to help advance the field and mentor the next generation of innovators. My work continues to be informed by active engagement in professional societies, including past leadership roles with the American Crystallographic Association and the U.S. National Committee for Crystallography. Whether through technology development or community service, I remain dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what X-ray science can achieve.
