About Joseph Ryan

My substantive role is Special Counsel in WorkSafe Victoria's Strategic Delivery stream, advising the teams responsible for implementing WorkSafe's strategy, including modernising WorkSafe's technology, about topics including- Occupational Health and Safety- Inspectors and their powers- Workers Compensation, claims and premiums- Licensing requirements- Employment law/change management- Privacy and Data Protection; and - Governance and Risk. This advice has contributed to the development of WorkSafe's new Customer Relationship Management system, significant technology upgrades for the inspectorate and for WorkSafe's customers, including moving licence forms and the Workers Injury Claim Form online. I have worked in employment law, in the WR & S team at Lander & Rogers then as Legal Counsel (IR/ER) in the WorkSafe Victoria Corporate Legal team. I have advised in relation to industrial and employee relations issues both at a policy level and on individual matters, including in relation to WorkSafe's head office relocation from Melbourne CBD to Geelong and its impacts on employees, including drafting the Geelong Relocation Deed, which provided benefits to encourage employees to continue to work with WorkSafe following the move. As part of WorkSafe's Corporate Legal team I have worked on a range of matters including responding to Royal Commissions/inquiries, representing WorkSafe on interdepartmental committees, managing litigation and giving general legal advice. Have acted in significant roles of importance at WorkSafe, including several stints as Acting General Counsel/Executive Director Legal and Governance, and as Board Secretary. I was on the NRL Victoria Board, including as chair 2013-2018.
