About Joseph Ryan
Joseph Ryan is a professor and chair of the Department of Criminal Justice and Security at Pace University in New York and a member of University’s Board of Trustees. Professor Ryan received his Ph.D. in Sociology from Fordham University. Dr. Ryan is a 25-year veteran of the New York City Police Department and was their expert on evaluations of all levels of police management, and their expert on community policing and violence, especially as it relates to spouse, child and elder abuse. Dr. Ryan was also a Visiting Fellow with the National Institute of Justice and is currently a visiting professor at the New York City and Westchester County Police Academies and a Certified Instructor by the State of New York Municipal Police Training Council. Dr. Ryan chaired an Advisory Group for the U.S. Department of Justice that developed security strategies for the 1996 summer Olympics, conducted the landmark National Evaluation of Title I of the 1994 Crime Act and provided testimony before the U.S. Congress’ sub-committee on National Security, Emerging Threats and International Relations re developing risk management and outcome based performance measurement strategies. Dr. Ryan has recently completed an impact evaluation of the Master’s degree in Homeland Security and an Executive Leaders Program, offered at the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security. Dr. Ryan is now also the director of Pace University’s new degree for a Master’s in Management for Public Safety and Homeland Security.
