About Joseph Troyer

I am a Pre-commissioned Bank Examiner with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). I started my career with the FDIC as a Financial Institution Intern in 2020, working off-site due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During the internship, I was introduced to the CAMELS ratings and shadowed examiners through the reviews. I converted to a Pre-commissioned Examiner in June 2022 following the completion of my under-graduate degree. As a Pre-commissioned Examiner, I perform reviews of the CAMELS components with an increased level of autonomy. My responsibilities and tasks include assessing the level of credit, liquidity and interest rate risk within an institution's operations; discussing strategic plans with bank management; delegating responsibilities to and maintaining ongoing communication with fellow examiners; and rating the CAMELS components. As a federal banking examiner, I am required to pass an exam to prove sufficiency of my understanding of bank examining. I will take the technical examination (TE) in late 2024 and convert to a Commissioned Examiner following my successful completion of the TE. After I pass the TE, I plan to sit for the CPA exam. Prior to converting to my full-time position with the FDIC, I completed my undergraduate degree at Illinois State University (ISU). I majored in Accounting and Finance and minored in Economics. During my senior year, I co-authored a paper researching the effects of changes prescribed by updated accounting guidance pertaining to hedging activities and instruments. I presented the paper at the 2022 Annual American Accounting Association conference in San Diego, CA. The paper was subsequently published in the Journal of Corporate Accounting & Finance.
