About Josh Bourden

Can you a teach an old dog new tricks? Sure, you can. It's never too late to change your life. It's perfectly OK to change your mind and want something else. That's exactly what I did by going back to school and studying Computer Science. Right before the pandemic, I decided that I would go back to school to pursue a Bachelor of Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. The last time I was in school was 2010, the year I completed my Bachelor of Commerce degree. The things you forget over the course of a decade- How overwhelming the pace and workload of an undergraduate program can be- Maths. Everything maths. I could not remember how to solve any calculus problem and had to relearn the fundamentals of algebra- That feeling of anticipation waiting for your professor to grant permission to flip your papers over and start the exam. While all of these things were scary, I am glad they didn't scare me enough to stop myself from finishing the program. I am now equipped with a set of skills that are effective in solving business problems including software engineering best practices, algorithms analysis and design, and an understanding of how to leverage coding languages. I cannot wait to use these skills as a software developer. Here are some of the technologies I have worked with over the last few years: Java / Python / JavaScript / SQLite / PostGreSQL / Git / React / Django / MERN - What I'm currently learning and working on- Deepening my understanding of Javascript best practices by learning TypeScript- Completing a course about Test Driven Development while building APIs using REST Framework in Django.
