About Josh Oakleaf

I’m a fourth-generation Wyomingite and environmental project manager specializing in large-scale reclamation and native vegetation restoration. At the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality’s Abandoned Mine Lands Division, I lead statewide planning, design, and implementation of reclamation projects that transform post-mining lands into resilient ecosystems—especially sagebrush steppe, one of North America’s most imperiled habitats. As Vegetation Coordinator, I direct the AML Native Plants Project (NP²), a collaborative initiative restoring habitat for over 350 sagebrush-obligate species, including greater sage-grouse, mule deer, and pronghorn. Our partnerships span agencies like BLM, Wyoming Game and Fish, The Nature Conservancy, and the Institute for Applied Ecology. I’m also an instructor and presenter for statewide vegetation training programs, contributing to research on sage-grouse ecology and adaptive reclamation strategies. Whether I’m mentoring professionals, hiking across Wyoming, or preparing for the next ASRS Annual Meeting, I bring a blend of technical precision, creative vision, and collaborative spirit to every endeavor.
