About Josh Roose
Dr Josh Roose is Associate Professor of Politics at the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation at Deakin University, Melbourne. His research focuses on the intersection of politics, law, sociology, and religion with an emphasis on political and religious violent extremism and terrorism. He was a Chief Investigator on the recently completed Australian Research Council (ARC) funded study The Far Right: Intellectuals, Masculinity and Citizenship (2021-2023) and lead Chief Investigator of the ARC funded project Anti-Women online Movements; Pathways and Patterns of Participation (2022-2025). He has current and past projects with key agencies including the Department of Home Affairs, Department of Defence, Office of the e-Safety Commissioner and Victorian Department of Justice and Community Safety. Dr Roose is an internationally recognised authority on the role of masculinities and ideologies in violent extremism and terrorism and the attraction of men to Salafi jihadist, extreme-right, violent misogynist, anti-democratic movements and new forms of violent extremist ideologies. Publications are available at his university website. He has presented his work at national and international academic, government and international body forums as a keynote and/or invited speaker and conducted training for various Federal, State and Local Government Departments, whilst also acting as an expert witness in terrorism cases and inquests. Dr Roose's research has provided expert insights for international media outlets including The New York Times, Washington post, BBC, The Times (UK), The Telegraph (UK),Time Magazine, Le Monde, France 24 and the Jakarta Post. He has also contributed expertise through interviews and background research for the full range of Australian television, print and radio outlets including ABC news programs including the 7.30 Program, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, 60 Minutes, The Guardian, SBS, The Australian, and Sky News. Josh is the current President of the Australian Association for the Study of Religion (AASR).
