About Joshua Bourdage

I am a professor and organizational consultant who specializes in generating new knowledge (and implementing this knowledge in organizations) around best practices in talent acquisition. My particular specialties have included how to manage and reduce applicant faking in hiring assessments, how to improve the interview process, how to attract the "right"(versus most) candidates, and how to integrate technology into HR practices to make them more valid, fair, and accessible. More recently, I've been working on the impact of AI in the workplace, the opportunities and challenges inherent in this, and how to ensure organizations are ready to appropriately implement AI in a fair and valid way. Recently this has included how to make the hiring process more accessible for those with anxiety, disabilities, and for neurodiverse candidates. My work has been featured in numerous journals and presented at conferences around the world, and has been featured in news outlets such as the New York Times, Globe and Mail, and CBC. In my consulting work, I've helped for profit, not for profit, and governmental agencies with a variety of important issues, ranging from workload measurement, hiring and selection support, interview design and candidate preparation best practices, and program development and assessment. In my role at the University of Calgary, I am the Principal Investigator of a research lab, where we conduct and publish independent research on these topics. We also collaborate with organizations to conduct field research, and are open to organizations reaching out to explore such research collaborations. I also teach undergraduate and graduate courses in a variety of topics, including selection, leadership, performance management, and how to use research to solve problems in organizations. From a leadership perspective, I currently serve as Graduate Program Director for the Department of Psychology, and have served as the Undergraduate Program Director. I am also a former Chair of the Canadian Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.
