Background
About Joshua Schulz
For the past three years, I have been developing, founding, and directing the Tony and Norene Salvaggio Salesian Honors Program at DeSales University. As director, I oversee a $1 million endowment supporting a vibrant community of students committed to deep literacy, professional growth, and spiritual formation rooted in the Catholic tradition. Now in its second year, the program serves 31 students and is on track to grow to 60+ within the next two years. Our hallmark is experiential learning—with monthly signature events, professional development workshops, and enriching international travel. My current research centers on medical ethics and the ethical challenges emerging technologies pose. I’m presently writing a book on the Principles of Catholic Medical Ethics. In previous work, I have explored Catholic Social Teaching alongside the Capabilities Approach, and addressed issues in normative and applied ethics, philosophy of religion, and political philosophy. Beyond academia, I have over a decade of experience on Institutional Review Boards, including IRB's at Lehigh Valley Health Network's and DeSales University. AT LVHN I work with an amazing team of ethicists to provide more than 400 hours of clinical ethics consultations annually, working closely with patients, families, and healthcare teams to address ethical questions and conflicts. Additionally, I lead medical ethics education efforts that reach over 500 students and healthcare professionals each year through symposia and workshops. In 2022, I answered the call to discern a vocation to the Permanent Diaconate in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. I am currently in my fourth year of formation and anticipate ordination, along with completion of my Masters of Theology, in Spring 2028.
