About Joshua Wallace

I have a background in software engineering, data analysis, image processing, physics, astrophysics, machine learning, and am always eager to learn new things. My current work is developing a C++ modeling and simulation software tool that, among other things, is able to simulate orbits of and interactions between spacecraft. My team is small, and I do everything from planning, implementing, documenting, testing, and refactoring code, as well as addressing user bug reports and feature requests. My most recent academic research work involved extracting time series brightness data from a series of images and then detecting periodic signals in those data. Through this work, I discovered a new type of variable star that was previously unknown to astronomy. Previously, I wrote a Python pipeline to simulate detection of a particular time series signal against an indistinguishable background and then perform Monte Carlo analysis of the detection quality. I took Princeton's "Fundamentals of Machine Learning" course and have applied machine learning models to work toward automating a manual classification step in my research advisor's planet detection pipeline.
