About Josse Koolen

I'm Josse Koolen, a passionate individual with a deep love for Arabic culture and language. At 26 years old, I studied at the University of Amsterdam, where I earned my Bachelor's degree in Arabic Culture and Language, and at Leiden University, where I recently completed my Master's in Middle Eastern Studies this past June. My quest to understand and appreciate the complexities of the Middle East didn't stop in the classroom. I had the privilege of moving to Cairo on two different occasions, where I resided in the historic Mounira district. During my time there, I dedicated myself to furthering my Arabic language skills by taking classes, allowing me to engage more deeply with the local culture and people. It was a transformative experience that broadened my perspective and enriched my understanding of the region. While academia has been important for my career path so far, my life has also been shaped by my diverse work experiences in the hospitality industry. Over the years, I worked in hotels, restaurants, and bars, which has provided me with many opportunities to interact with people from all walks of life, representing myriad cultures and languages. These experiences have not only honed my interpersonal skills but also reinforced my belief in the power of genuine human connections. I'm eager to explore new opportunities and collaborations that allow me to bridge the gap between cultures, fostering understanding and appreciation in today's interconnected world.
