Background

About Joyce Ayoson

How do you build a career that sits at the intersection of AI, ethics, law, and policy, and still feels deeply human? That’s the question that’s shaped my journey so far. I graduated with First-Class Honours in Psychology and Economics (Econometrics) from the University of Manitoba, where I completed a thesis on how informed consent shapes trust in generative AI. Grounded in GDPR principles (Articles 5–7 and 22) and the Technology Acceptance Model, the project gave me a research-driven foundation in AI ethics, legal frameworks, and user-centered design. Now, as a Master of Management in Artificial Intelligence (MMAI) candidate at the Schulich School of Business, and a Vector Institute Scholar, I’m building the technical and policy fluency needed to help organizations build AI systems that are compliant, transparent, and fair. I work with tools like Python, SQL, SPSS, and STATA to analyze complex data and translate insights into actionable governance strategies. Beyond the classroom, I serve as VP of Learning & Development for the Schulich AI & Analytics Society, where I lead programming that has reached over 100 graduate students across AI governance, data science, and industry ethics. I’m also currently co-designing the Know Your Rights legal toolkit for Black youth in Ontario as part of an ongoing community research initiative funded by the Law Foundation of Ontario, helping participants explore how legal systems, rights awareness, and systemic barriers impact their lived experience. I’m also the creator of the blog How to Get Away with Surviving Adulthood, where I explore the realities of navigating career, money, and identity as a young Black professional working in tech and policy spaces. I’m currently focused on growing into a future career in tech law and AI governance, and I’m always open to connecting with people and organizations building ethical, regulatory, and policy-aligned innovation.
