Background
About Joyce Chan
When I came to Rutgers as a first-year student, I arrived undecided but wholeheartedly excited to begin my personal and intellectual journey. As a Rutgers Arts and Science student, I decided to take courses in a wide range of subjects, including but not limited to the following: healthcare and nutrition; a new language; writing; history of labor and work; business and finance; mathematics; science courses; sociology; and design and graphical courses. The diversity of these classes broadened my perspective of the world and my place in it. Through my academic and self-exploration, I discovered that I care deeply about humanity and the environment that encompasses our well-being. After taking an introductory class in Urban Planning and Design, I decided that designing healthy and sustainable cities for our future is one of the most crucial tasks that I could perform. I have always been fascinated with the constantly changing cities, both small and large, and the impacts they have made to those who live in and visit them. I believe that urban planning is one of the most influential and holistic approaches towards systemic healing and improving the health of our at-risk populations. I am pursuing a major in Urban Planning and Design and minors in Business Administration and Architectural Studies (anticipated graduation 2024). I have taken courses that have built my oral and visual communication skills while bolstering my ability to work collaboratively. In my spare time, I enjoy photography, appreciating new music, spending quality time with my family and friends, along with exploring and observing nature and cities. I really enjoy working with others and discussing what actions should be taken to plan our sustainable cities of tomorrow, so I am exploring careers in urban or regional planning and transportation planning. I am particularly interested in learning about the day-to-day work involved in these roles. I am open to internships and part-time job opportunities, as well as connecting with people to learn more about careers in Urban Planning and Design.
