About Joyce Omwoha

I am a lecturer at the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at The Technical University of Kenya. I hold a PhD in Media Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa; Masters in Communication Studies from Moi University, Kenya and BA Communications from Daystar University, Kenya. I have won international grants and fellowships which have enabled her to carry out research on: Media, Citizenship and Identity, Gender Studies, Health Communication, policy analysis and the analysis of the Social Media Culture in Kenya and beyond. My research interests includes: Media, Citizenship and Identity, Gender Studies, Health Communication and the analysis of the Social Media Culture in Kenya. I have published journal articles and book chapters in these areas. I explore digital citizenship; how, using social media and technology can promote peace and sustainable development. I am currently involved in “Social mediated gender performances and representations: Popular culture, politics and everyday citizenship in Africa” book project where she explores Social Media and Feminist e-Knowledges in Africa; she is also exploring digital citizenship; how, using social media and technology can promote peace and sustainable development. I am also working on a project titled Media Framing of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in Kenya’s Nation and Standard Newspapers for a proposed book titled “Politics of Age in Sex and Sexuality Education for Children and Young People” in the journal of Sex Education. I am a communications strategist at Africa Coordinating Centre for the Abandonment of FGM/C (ACCAF); a network of academics from the medical, legal and gender fields.
