As the principal architect at Studio AJO, my focus is using tried and tested regional mid-century modern design principles for commercial and residential projects—with an emphasis on designing spaces and places that are both environmentally sensitive and culturally appropriate. Years ago, I made a name for myself in the high-fashion circles of London, where I ran my own firm from 1989 to 2004. I studied in London in 1986 on a Rotary Foundation scholarship after graduating from Notre Dame. In London, my home designs featured unobtrusive glass-enclosed spaces to let clients still experience the outdoors from the inside. After moving to Fort Myers, I’ve kept that same idea in mind. At Studio AJO, we design homes and buildings that break the mold of the cookie-cutter Mediterranean style you see everywhere in Florida. Instead, we use modern architecture that is designed better for Florida’s hot sun, wind, and rainy weather. Before opening Studio AJO, I was a co-founding partner at the London-based firm Azman Owens Architects, where I worked with clients like former London Mayor and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Fashion Icon Alexander McQueen, Fashion Guru Isabella Blow, and retail corporation TAGHeuer. My work has received awards from the UK’s Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and the American Institute of Architects (AIA)—as well as many design competitions internationally. In 2017, I was the AIA Florida President—the third female president in the state’s professional organization’s 105-year history. I ran with a message of communicating value and attempting to de-mystify my profession to the public. I was named BEST PRESIDENT by the Florida Weekly (May 2017).
