About Juan David Ramirez

I’m an Associate Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Assistant Director of Molecular Microbiology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. I also serve as a Professor at Universidad del Rosario in Bogotá, Colombia, where I direct the Center for Research in Microbiology and Biotechnology (CIMBIUR). For over 16 years, my research has focused on the molecular epidemiology, genomics, and host–pathogen interactions of a wide range of infectious agents, including Trypanosoma cruzi, Giardia, Leishmania, and emerging viruses such as Zika, SARS-CoV-2, and Monkeypox. My work bridges molecular microbiology, parasitology, and microbiome science, with a strong emphasis on tropical diseases and global health. I lead international collaborations aimed at improving diagnostics, understanding vector and host biology, and informing public health strategies in endemic regions—particularly across Latin America. I’m passionate about translating molecular insights into tools for disease control and capacity building. I’m also deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists in pathogen genomics, microbiome research, and One Health. With over 300 peer-reviewed publications, my mission is to integrate science, training, and global collaboration to tackle neglected and emerging infectious diseases.
