About Jude Oak

In 2017, I started working as a contract document publisher and technical writer with business immigration law firms. I took raw, incredibly technical information (scientific journals, information about inventions or profound improvements, letters from world-leading experts, graphs, and charts) about the clients’ careers in engineering and sustainability and created understandable documents about why their unique skills would benefit the US economy if they immigrated. A large part of my job involved communication. I worked on a remote crossfunctional team, communicating with my team members and subject matter experts to check accuracy. I edited and proofread technical documents to ensure clarity, accuracy, and consistency. When a remote team I’d joined struggled to get their clients’ immigration petitions approved, I pitched creating a style guideline and user persona. My team wanted to showcase the clients’ work by including as much raw information as possible. This made the petitions challenging to read. I led designing and implementing the style guideline and user persona to make the petitions user-friendly, resulting in a 100% approval rating. My work with business immigration law firms became more user-focused, so I pitched the idea of focusing on content design. After noticing that the onboarding process ate up a lot of time for our clients and staff because it didn’t collect all the necessary information from the start, I redesigned the client onboarding process, leading to a 20% reduction in onboarding time. In order for document publication or technical writing to be done well and be easy to understand, it needs to be user-focused, so I decided to specialize in UX (user experience) writing. I also wanted to gain more experience with the visual side of UX. To do this, I took the certification course with the UX Writing Academy. Yuval Keshtcher, Founder and CEO of the UX Writing Hub and my mentor, says: “Jude's dedication to words and strategy is truly unparalleled.” I’ve loved working for myself because I’m independent and driven but there’s also a lot of administrative overhead, which took away from the time I was able to focus on doing what I love most: solving communication puzzles. My goal is to find a new position where I can focus on doing what I love most and grow in that role.
