About Judith Warner

Best-selling, award-winning journalist, specialized in mental health and American family life, with many years of experience in online and print journalism, plus a decade of writing and editing for progressive non-profits. Currently teaching first-person writing and mental health in media at Georgetown University. I’m known for engaging writing, compelling storytelling, meticulous and well-synthesized research, and a genuine commitment to finding and airing diverse voices and perspectives. My work is driven by a vivid sense of curiosity and desire for social justice. I began my 30-year career in a PhD program at Columbia University, studying English and French literature and history, then dedicated myself to journalism, serving as a contributing correspondent for Newsweek in Paris, and later as a contributing columnist for the New York Times and a contributing writer for the Times Magazine. My freelance news and feature writing, opinion pieces, book reviews and TV recaps have appeared online and in print for publications including the Washington Post, Time.com (where I was a weekly columnist for Time Ideas), the New Republic and Elle. My pieces in the Times have consistently ranked among the paper’s top five most-emailed; one Times magazine feature, on what happened to the women of the so-called “opt-out revolution,” received more than comments. I’m the author or co-author of nine works of non-fiction, including the New York Times best-seller Perfect Madness: Motherhood in the Age of Anxiety, and the multiple award-winning We’ve Got Issues: Children and Parents in the Age of Medication. I’m also skilled in non-profit writing and media relations, and spent a decade as a program manager, editor, fundraiser, event moderator and mentor as a Senior Fellow for the Center for American Progress and Square One Politics, and as a Journalism Fellow for the Reflective Democracy Campaign, a project of the Women Donors Network. I recently completed work on the Carter Center Mental Health Program's new Journalism Resource Guide for Mental Health Reporting, a labor of love I wrote and researched in collaboration with program staff. I'm highly experienced in public speaking, and have addressed audiences about mental health, American family life, and politics at numerous esteemed educational institutions and cultural, professional and advocacy organizations including Harvard Medical School, Columbia University, the National Book Festival, and NAMI. I’m eager to find new experiences in academia, journalism, or mission-driven organizations.
