About Julia Cartwright

Julia joins Syracuse University in September 2023 as Chief of Staff to the Vice Chancellor, Provost and Chief Academic Officer. Prior to her new position at Syracuse, she served as the Senior Associate Dean of Communications. Promotion and Public Affairs at New York University School of Global Public Health (January 2015-August 2023), where she also held the role of Chief of Staff (2017-2022). Prior to her tenure at NYU, she spearheaded the award-winning communications initiatives of the American Legacy Foundation (now Truth Initiative) devoted to reducing the deadly toll tobacco takes in our nation. The foundation's iconic truth campaign has been credited in part with the historic decline in youth smoking prevalence in the US since its launch in She joined Legacy in September 2002, following 18 years with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC). As a member of the original team that launched the Center in 1984, Ms. Cartwright is credited with helping to shape the public image of the nonprofit as it grew from a handful of committed child advocates to the internationally-respected organization it is today. Julia is a graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College (1981) and earned her Master’s Degree in Corporate Communications at Georgetown University (2011). She holds an executive certificate in Global Change from the Harvard Kennedy School (2014) and Nonprofit Management from Georgetown University’s Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership (2004). In 2006, she was named a finalist in PR News' annual PR Professional of the Year (Nonprofit/Association) competition. She has also served on the Public Relations Committee of NCMEC's Board of Directors.
