Julia Craven is a senior writer and editor with New America’s Better Life Lab, researching Black women’s health and well-being. Her work has specifically focused on investigating the health consequences of eviction on Black children—alongside actionable solutions to mitigate the crisis—and the role of systemic racism in worsening Black maternal and child health outcomes.Prior to this, Craven was a freelance reporter exploring health, science, and wellness—from visual illusions and audio pareidolia to public health policy and wellness trends. Before that, she spent five years reporting on race and politics.Craven is the brain behind Salt + Yams, an acclaimed newsletter dedicated to archiving Black health history. Her writing has been featured in New York Magazine, Vox, Slate, Popular Science, and more. Notably, her work “It’s Not Too Late To Save Black Lives,” a thoroughly reported, solutions-based framework for lessening the impact of COVID-19 on Black Americans, is featured in the 2021 edition of The Best American Science and Nature Writing and the American Medical Association’s COVID resources.
