About Julia Hennessy

I do the hard jobs. I tackle the most complex subjects – restorative justice, youth justice, child protection, family group conferences, sexual violence, family violence – and lead policy and delivery changes to transform them. In my 30-year career I have worked all sides of the fence, from my social work origins in the UK, to leading services for children and families, to heading up political taskforces in both the UK and New Zealand to develop and trial cutting edge, nationwide transformations in social services. I can wrestle change through the most complex political environments, always driven by my personal goal of supporting those in need. I’m now returning home from my eighteen years in leadership roles in NZ. I have learnt much from my immersion in the practices of family group conferencing and restorative justice, both well established in NZ. I have also been plunged into cultural settings entirely new to me, taking the time to learn and understand the political and cultural contexts of Māori and Pasifika, building trust by operating within the appropriate cultural protocols, and taking a relational, co-design approach. Colleagues and peers note that I have tremendous skills in engaging people from wide ranging communities, winning the trust of those naturally suspicious of State intervention. In terms of social services contracting, in both countries I have strong experience of being both the commissioner and the provider. In all cases, setting up systems for early help is a passion of mine – children and families need ease of access to support that is respectful and timely. I am now seeking opportunities in England to continue to contribute my international experience and to create lasting change for those who need it.
