Background
About Julia Johns
I graduated with my Master’s degree in Curriculum & Instruction with an emphasis on Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education at UC-Denver in May 2016. I am currently teaching English Language Development at Alameda International School in Lakewood, Colorado. In December 2013, I finished studying at the University of Colorado at Denver in the Graduate Urban Community Teacher Education program. I have completed my licensure in secondary Social Studies education. I have a dual Bachelor's in Political Science and Communication Studies with an emphasis on gender & ethnic studies. My overall academic focus was on how our political, economic, social, gender, and racial identities are communicated and affect our interactions with the world around us from interpersonal to professional interactions. My love for academics drives my professional goals as a junior/senior high school social studies teacher, particularly in low-income schools. My work with linguistically diverse students in Social Studies inspired me to expand my licensure endorsement to include English Language Development. My prior professional experience before a decade of teaching was primarily within non-profit organizations focused on inequities of gender, sexual orientation, economics, and race. While I remain actively engaged with social justice, I shifted my focus from working in the non-profit realm to teaching secondary education. My professional philosophy is based on the metaphor that we cannot be rescuing individual people drowning at the end of the river, but we must work at the beginning of the river where people are systematically being pushed into the river to drown.
