Background
About Julia K. Sloane
Humans are complex, dynamic systems embedded within complex, dynamic systems. I’m a systems level thinker who enjoys complex problem solving. I work at the intersection of culture, biology, technology and environment to develop holistic understandings of the behaviors and lived-experiences of individuals. I'm particularly interested in how the interactions of these factors influence individuals health outcomes, mental wellness, and behavioral motivations, and can innovate more inclusive futures. I teach courses in anthropology, global health and human developmental sciences at UCSD. My doctoral research focused on aging, bio-cultural processes of development, and meaning-making among individuals with cognitive and neurological abnormalities, such as Parkinson's Disease. I'm passionate about interdisciplinary efforts that innovate more inclusive technologies and designs. Currently, I enjoy investigating possible deep tech enabled futures with Explorer's Lab. Some research interests include: diversity, equity, and inclusion (especially gender and health equity), bio-cultural influences on development and health outcomes, global and public health, mental health, neurological maladies, neurodivergence, aging, person-centered medicine, transformative experience, subjectivity and lived-experience, meaning-making and phenomenology, morality, and human-technology interactions. Some skills include: independently crafting and driving research from concept to completion; observational research, qualitative and mixed-methods research, ethnographic and epidemiological methods e.g. in-depth interviews, observational studies, cohort studies, case control studies; multiple analytic techniques, e.g. grounded theory, meta-analysis, interpretive phenomenological analysis, statistical analysis, data analysis software Atlas.ti, MAXQDA, R, SPSS; cross-functional collaboration; writing, presenting and communicating findings and results to various audiences; working with multiple stakeholders.
