About Julia Law

Hey, I'm Julia, an undergraduate student in the Bachelor of Design in City Innovation program at the University of Calgary. As a member of the first ever cohort of BDCI students, I have dived down the path of change making, aiming to become a leader in advocacy and the pursuit of a better post-secondary experience for all. In my first year of my undergraduate studies, I was elected as a class representative for a small group of ~20 students. I advocated for a variety of things for my small constituency, including an deadline policy that would later be implemented into all courses of the BDCI, preventing courses from having major deadlines within the same week of each other. My term concluded with my election as the first ever faculty representative for the School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape at the University of Calgary Students' Union. As faculty rep, I bridged the gap between SAPL undergraduates and the greater campus community. I co-founded, and served as President, for the City Innovation Students' Association, an organization representing the interests of undergraduate SAPL students while also hosting events such as movie nights, bonfires, bottle drives, etc. During my term I also initiated the process to include an undergraduate publication for SAPL students within degree curriculum, allowing my constituents and future BDCI students to have their work showcased. I currently sit as the Vice-President External of the Students' Union, a role I ran for following a grown passion for advocacy and the involvement in student government. I aim to connect students to the advocacy scene by not only updating them of my own activities and wins, but also supporting them to do the same. Students deserve to be aware of what their Union does for them but also should be elevated by their Union to do anything they can to support advocacy. Following completion of my undergraduate studies, I plan to pursue either a Masters in Architecture or Planning, with a focus on bettering the built environment for all, especially students and those in struggle.
