About Julia Lohmann

Julia Lohmann is a designer based in Helsinki, Finland, and a professor of practice in contemporary design at Aalto University. She is inspired by the world outside of established design disciplines as well as by unusual and undervalued natural materials. Lohmann realises projects on the threshold between design, science and art which probe our attitudes towards the world that sustains us. Her objects and installations are exhibited worldwide and part of major private and public collections, e.g. the MoMA, New York. Lohmann holds a PhD from the Royal College of Art in conjunction with the Victoria & Albert Museum, entitled "The Department of Seaweed: Co-Speculative Design in a Museum Residency". Lohmann investigates kelp as a sustainable design material and as a method to participatively engage a community of practice in a museum residency. She developed the method of co-speculation that incorporates facets from critical and transition design. Lohmann is also one of the founders of the Department of Seaweed e.V, a collective and platform for the development of marine algae as a sustainable material for making.
