About Julia Mak

Julia Mak (she/her) is a second-generation Chinese-Canadian dance artist based in Tkaronto (Toronto), ON. As a performance maker, Julia thinks critically about exploring and pushing the creative boundaries of what defines dance. Julia is an interrogative, contemporary movement artist, who often works in experimental, immersive, and interdisciplinary mediums. Much of her artistic inspiration stems from her inquisitive nature as she brings personal experiences to colour her creations. Throughout her career, Julia has had the privilege of working with notable choreographers such as Gioconda Barbuto, Guillaume Côté, and Hanna Kiel. Notably, some of her projects have also been featured in events such as Purple Glow Collective’s (formerly known as Purple Glow Mag), Bloom Fest, and The Garage TO 2021 Fall showing, where she utilized the medium of film in combination with dance. In addition to performing, Julia regularly works in modes as a creative producer and arts administrator. Her most recent endeavour involved co-producing (IN) Momentum (2024), a full-evening dance performance presented at the Citadel + Compagnie Theatre. She is a passionate advocator for arts diversity and accessibility, which has been a core focus within her post-secondary studies. A recent 2024 graduate, she holds her BFA in Performance Dance and minor in Philosophy from Toronto Metropolitan University and is thrilled to continue to immerse herself into the Canadian dance scene.
