About Julia Rabe

I grew up in Wisconsin and attended school in Illinois where I graduated and moved to Iowa for work. I suppose that makes me as Midwest as midwest can possibly be. I grew up with a Deaf parent and experienced the CODA life similar to many of my friends with Deaf families. I grew up interpreting at church and doctor's offices, I used ASL before I could talk, and I was immersed in the Deaf community from a very young age. Currently, I am working as an associate professor teaching American Sign Language. I am also engaged in an administrator internship through UNI's Principal Preparation program in order to complete my administrator certification in Iowa.I place very strong importance on effective leadership skills. My core values are communication, transparency and authenticity, inclusion and growth. I believe in leading by example and facilitating growth through meaningful and sustainable self-reflection. My passion lies with special education students, especially within the K-12 educational setting. I have spent my career working within the field of special education and Deaf education. I have written research on topics related to Deaf education teacher retention and self-efficacy. I have also assisted in the passage of successful legislation, written successful grants, and found multiple ways to become involved in my local and regional community.
