About Julia Ricks

I started my library career in the Cobb County Public Library System as a library tech. It took me a little while but I eventually got my Master's in Library Science at the University of Kentucky and got a position as Assistant Archivist at St Thomas University in Miami Gardens. During this time I also obtained a post-graduate certificate in Digital Curation from Johns Hopkins University and it was here that I really discovered a love and appreciation for metadata. I think it's really important to understand how metadata can help organizations improve the visibility of their collections; t's also important to know the way collections and items are described and the impacts of those descriptions on the communities that they are about. I am so happy to begin to put this knowledge to use at UMass Amherst in a few weeks! I am currently enjoying working with various special collections, and learning original book cataloging. I'm enhancing my professional development with Library Juice courses as well and having fun in the process.
