About Julia Standen

I was born in Santa Cruz, CA and I grew up surrounded by animals, and at an early age got to experience the joy that came with caring for my own menagerie. I fell in love with reptiles after my dad brought home my first snake, a Ball Python named Stanley who I still have 16 years later. I pride myself in my ability to care for even the most challenging species and have been successful in the captive husbandry and care of everything from Dragon Snakes to Dart Frogs. Owning and caring for these animals has always been my privilege and my utmost joy in life. I began my career with animals as a teenager when I began volunteering for Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. When I turned 18 I took on my first real job grooming dogs and worked various jobs in the animal industry until I found my true passion in exotic animal care and welfare. My current position at Peninsula Humane Society has given me the opportunity to work with and educate people about some of the most amazing, and misunderstood animals on the planet and I have loved every minute of it. I find working with exotic animals to be both humbling and rewarding as there is always more to learn and you never know what will come through the door on any given day. My goal is always to further my knowledge of animal care and to share my love and passion for the many amazing species we share this planet with.
