About Julia Wright

My organizational and communication skills are well demonstrated in my work and volunteer experiences. I have worked as a hostess at a restaurant for the past three years. This has helped me acquire the professionalism and communication skills necessary for talking to customers and managers. I also interned with Virginia Beach History Museums over Summer 2019. During my time there, I learned how public programs are planned and executed. Volunteering at the department’s annual summer festival helped me see how many vendors need to be contacted in order to make an event in support of departmental fundraising successful. It also taught me that having good customer service is an imperative quality when interacting with the public. An important skill which I have learned during my experience was how to add to a database for historic artifacts. Through typing up the artifacts’ various catalogue datasheets, I was able to compile all of the information about each artifact in one place. This is important because it allows historians to keep track of the condition, size, and location of the artifacts they are responsible for preserving. It was a priority for me to maintain compliance by following procedures for specific artifacts. My abilities stem from my education at the University of Virginia. My degree in English with a minor in History taught me the importance of looking at situations through new perspectives and the knowledge needed to properly analyze and comprehend written documents. This field of study has also greatly improved my writing skills through producing numerous papers and research projects. I hold reliability to the utmost importance; I have never missed a deadline and I keep my calendar extremely organized. I have a deep appreciation for helping others. I have volunteered with the organization College Mentors for Kids at the University of Virginia. Through meeting with an elementary school student from the local Charlottesville community once a week, I was able to encourage her in her own aspirations and convey to her the importance of working hard in school. I also engaged with fellow mentors and mentees through participating in activities to promote the importance of higher education. I believe that I have made a positive impact on others because of my efforts with this organization.
