About Julie Bennett
As an epidemiologist, I specialise in public health research with a focus on infectious diseases, indoor air quality, and housing and health. I am a global leader in rheumatic heart disease (RHD) research, driving impactful studies that shape clinical policy and address socio-economic and environmental health determinants. I have led various clinical trials, including a multiphase study on subcutaneous penicillin injections (SCIP) to prevent RHD, ensuring strong scientific foundations that benefit participants. I’m proud to be a member of the WHO guideline development group for acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and RHD, and I contribute to Pū Manawa (New Zealand ARF Network). I am also a member of He Kainga Oranga (Housing and Health Research Programme). Honoured with the Health Research Council Liley Medal, my work has advanced the understanding of rheumatic fever risk factors and Group A Streptococcal infections. Additionally, I am a founding member of the New Zealand Indoor Air Quality Research Centre and the sole New Zealand representative on the WHO consultation group for defining airborne transmission of infectious pathogens.
