About Julien Choisnard

I have experience in engineering and R&D related to renewable energies in diversified professional situations since 2002 : in a research center at INRS-Energie, with a consulting engineering company in Newfoundland, at the Canadian Meteorological Center and for more than 15 years at Hydro-Québec. I have extensive expertise on issues related to variable renewable energies, such as wind and solar: techniques for resource and energy assessment; operation in northern climate and data acquisition; grid integration, weather forecasting and wind forecasting. During my experience at Hydro-Québec, I participated in the analysis of the technical feasibility of many wind projects, specifications and validations of data acquisition requirements and performance tests for commercial commissioning, and several wind integration studies into the Hydro-Québec system. My versatile technical background has allowed me to contribute significantly to the techniques and tools used to forecast the wind power production of over 3500 MW. Since 2017, I have been actively involved in HQ's new challenges related to the energy transition, notably the development of the first solar power plant project in Quebec, the micro-grid project in downtown Lac-Mégantic, large scale energy storage system and wind power project. I have published several studies in peer-reviewed journals, or presented at international conferences. I have also participated in a technical note for the World Bank: Renewable Energy Forecasting System- Energy Sector Management Assistance Program Guidance Note.
