About Julio Baez

My experience allows me to match bioprocesses with products considering technology, quality, cost and volume. I worked for organizations conducting and managing upstream and downstream processes while developing innovative technologies. Currently I work at UCSD to implement bioprocessing technology instruction and facilities. Recently I developed biosimilars at Cipla and led a unit of the US Department of Energy to develop processes for biofuels and industrial bioproducts. My core competencies include: • Product/process development from discovery to post-commercialization for biomaterials used in the pharmaceutical, biofuel, chemical, agricultural and nutraceutical industries based on microbial (E. coli, Pichia, Saccharomyces, Aspergillus, Gluconobacter, Streptomyces), Bacculovirus-infected insect cell culture, mammalian cell culture (CHO, HEK) and transgenic plants (soy, tobacco, corn, barley). • Experience with plant-derived transgenics, bioproducts, biosimilars, orphan drugs, monoclonal antibodies and industrial proteins. • Expertise in biocomparability studies, technology transfer, FTO evaluation and bioproduct business development. • Preparations of SBIRs and successful STTR (with UC Davis) and DARPA (with Arizona State) grants • Preparation of CMC (Chemical, Manufacturing & Control) sections for regulatory submissions. In addition I teach biopharmaceutical, biochemistry, bioprocessing and agricultural biotechnology courses and workshops at leading universities and international conferences.
