About Julio Silva

Including applicable courses in comparative vertebrate anatomy and animal behavior, I have worked in settings that have allowed me to gain knowledge with wildlife, administration, and a variety of laboratories involving biology and chemistry. My work with wildlife includes animal husbandry/handling, blood draws, treatment plan creation and implementation, basic veterinary care including injections and topical medicine application, beak/nail trimming, animal behavior observation, behavior modification through positive reinforcement and target training, lab sterilization practices, diet preparation and tracking, maintenance of enclosures, and enrichment. Lab work through my education has provided me with concrete experience in conducting DNA extraction, PCR, identification of SNP and RFLP, perform ELISA, use of NMR and IR machines, gas chromatography, microscopy, slide preparation, bacterial transformation and culturing, autoclave use, sterilization techniques, gel-electrophoresis, cleaning glassware, stock solution creation, how to determine MIC, Minimum Bacteriostatic Concentration and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration, and safe laboratory practices. With administration, I was a part of a development team meant to foster community relationships, wrote standard operating procedures, record keeping, and collaborated with many different departments. Through professional work with the public as well as with co-workers, I have gained interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills that allow me to be an effective member of any team.
