Background
About June Kuria
Intervention Officer and Ourreach Community worker. I am a mother to a vibrant young man. Founder of Bedfordshire Community Awards was started as a means of saying a big public ‘Thank you!' The Charities I volunteered with are 1) Queens Park Community Organisation a grassroots organisation and registered charity targeting the most deprived areas in Bedford. Focuses on four objectives, Welfare, Capacity Building, Recreation and Relief of Poverty. As a Bedford Charity, it empowers local people to make a difference by building bridges between communities, schools and organisations. I spearheaded a project during lockdown where I managed to recruit volunteers, facilitating the smooth running of ordering bespoke food parcels items that catered for various diverse communities in Bedford. 2)The Biddenham show- I was in the committee as a local volunteer; the event aim is to bring the annual show to the village whilst at the same time raising funds for local charities and interest groups. 3)Tibbs Dementia Foundation – I was on the fundraising committee that raised money for people diagnosed with dementia and help them live well with the diagnosis. 4)Wooden Spoon- Rugby based charity. The committee is at the heart of 15 active members in Bedfordshire. In 2018 we held a fundraising event at Bedford Athletic Rugby Club. We raised to fund the design and build of the new sensory garden at Ridgeway School in Kempston that will be used by children with the most complex care needs, enabling them to have a safe environment in which to play independently. 5) Kenya Community in Bedford- I was the chairlady for 3 years and one of the main organisers of the event that brought Kenyans together. Currently as a steering committee member I still manage to bring organisations that offer funding or sponsorship for our ongoing Kenyan events. 6) St Gregory’s middle school - Biddenham- Secretary of the PTA, raised money towards the school minibus this was also in collaboration with the Biddenham show. 7) School Governor – St Gregory’s Lower School - Biddenham – As a school governor I was in the safeguarding team.I had the opportunity to sit on the panel to recruit a headteacher. 8) Parochial Church Council- Church of England Biddenham I served on the committee of Biddenham Church of England for 1 year. 9)Fusion Youth Choir- Queens Park – I was a member of the parents committee as part of Faith in Queens Park. 10) Bedford African Community Event: 2017 I was one of the founders of the first ever African event in Bedford.
